View Full Version : PEG tube to a BUTTON
bethemily 03-03-2006, 09:56 PM Hello ladies,
Well on monday Emily has to go into the gen. surgeons office and get her PEg tube replaced with a button. They are doing it right in the office:tongue10: . They arent giving her any meds or anything. ANy moms been through this? I feel awful doing this but her peg tube has gotten to short to keep using. Does anyone like one button over an other? Is it any easier? Do they come out offten? I am so used to the peg tube that I am not sure about this button. Any thought suggestions info on this. The big thing I am worried about with emily is that she is crawling and what she does is crawl dragging her pump and food everywhere! It puls on her tube bad but she doesnt care. I would love to hear from you guys.:hello2: . How long will she be in pain. Have you guys had one likea peg pulled for a button and help I am nervous. Plus my strength(husband) is gone to help me through this. Thanks guys Beth:smt109
raisingangels 03-04-2006, 01:21 AM Oh, this is a simple one sweetie
They will pull the peg out which is a quick tug & it will slide out, then they will put the button in, fill up the ballon and that's it.
She will cry mainly because the sensation is so different and the pressure she feels might scare her a bit. I wouldn't go so far as to say it hurts. Noah didn't even flinch when he had his last one changed out form a peg to button back in June. You are going to love the button, I promise you and she will get much less pull with the button as opposed to the peg. I always give Noah some Tylenol after he gets his changed just because he will complain of feeling a little bruised around the stoma site. Good Luck !! It won't be that bad, I promise !!!
Sam's Mom 03-04-2006, 08:46 AM Sam did not have any problems when changed to the button. Fussed for a bit then he was fine. i on the other hand almost passed out--just got myself so worked out about it I had to leave the room. Sam did much better than Mom!
I find the button much easier to care for and use. Good Luck.
melba19 03-04-2006, 11:10 AM Katy is right about the change of the peg to the button. It may bother her for a few seconds but after that she should be fine.
I will tell you that I found the button to be so much easier to use and deal with. I hope that you have no problems and find using the button easier. I do wish you luck.

Becky in NM 03-04-2006, 12:25 PM Wow, things were completely different -- and, I think, much easier -- in Daniel's case.
When he went from the long G tube to a Genie button, the GI just clamped the tube close to his stomach, cut the tube close to the clamp, popped the button on the end, and clamped on the piece that secures it. D is actually fascinated by the whole process, which is a good thing, because he gets his button changed like that every three months.
VTC1028 03-04-2006, 01:46 PM We are the opposite of everyone else....
We were anxious to go from a peg to a mic-key because we kept hearing how great the button was. But, for us, since Tucker retches so much and we need to be able to vent him quickly, we keep the extension on his button most of the time anyway, so it's more of a pain than the peg for us. And we need to make sure we have the extention & syringe right near him, whereas before we only had to worry about the syringe. I guess we could just open the button and let him vent, but then there'd be a mess to clean up all the time. Sorry to butt in, but I'll ask a question on this post too...How do you guys vent the buttons?
The button has also made his stoma more granulated. And he plays with it more, but that may be because he's getting older and more aware. SOOOOOO, we are going back to the PEG next time it has to be switched out.
raisingangels 03-04-2006, 02:15 PM We saw more granuloma as well, as far as the venting we actually keep Noah's balloon filled a little less then it should be and for the most part he vents around it.
Sam's Mom 03-04-2006, 03:49 PM To vent Sam, I just use a 10cc syringe I use for meds and put it in the button. I keep a paper towel handy to catch any "stuff" squirting out.
Sorry to add on some questions to your post--but how often do you all vent your kiddos. Sometimes I do not feel like I vent enough. He seems to need it after meals--but then we loose some food in the process.
raisingangels 03-04-2006, 05:39 PM Ug !! That is just the worst when they spill. Your GI should have told you to put that stuff back in. These kids need all they can get. As far as venting you will see much better results and alot less if you put on the extension (preferably the bulos one, and use a 60cc syringe, pull out the slider thing inside of it, then hold it straight up and unclamp the extension tube, the air should rush out 1st, then once you see him backing up the tube with liquid clamp the tube. We vent Noah abut 5 times a day, we kinda squeeze his tummy a bit a rub it while he's venting to be sure we get all the air out but, we always push back all the liquids he brings up into the syringe.
VTC1028 03-04-2006, 06:17 PM I vent the same way, using the regular extension though. We have to vent Tucker all the time b/c he's so gassy and retches so much. Since he's been on the pump, I try to vent him at least 6x a day for 10-15 minutes and then he gets 1 hour breaks from pump morning and night, and we leave him venting the whole time. I usually put the "stuff" back in, unless it's unusually mucousy or has yellow bile, and then I dump it.

bethemily 03-06-2006, 11:47 PM Hi guys!
Well its all done! No one told me how bad the pain could get for Emily. The surgeon said that she had an older style peg tube and that it was going to hurt a little bit more and holy poop did she flip!!! Oh my. Well he pulled it out and she cried and then she started bleeding and then he put the button in. I have to say it is so pretty compared to the barbaric thing she had before. I might sound silly but I did not sleep all night and then I was a controled wreck in the office and then after I felt like getting sick I HATE putting Emily through this crap!! So she is n tylenol and motrin now and sleeping. Thanks again everyone! All the encouraging notes helped out alot!!!! Beth
raisingangels 03-07-2006, 02:18 PM We always needed to give Noah Motrin after his buttons were changed. I'm sure it hurts but, I also think the sensation scares them to death as well !!! I'm glad it went good and its done...it is much better looking then the peg isn't it ???
Becky in NM 03-07-2006, 02:21 PM I'm glad it's over with! Poor kiddo -- it bled???
