Ok - Not sure where to start. My dd is 2 and has GERD. She had a terrible PH probe result in 1/06 as well as endoscopy results that showed severe inflamation . They changed her meds and redid the ph probe 2/06 with still bad results. She has bad asthma, constant wheezing and are treating her with nexium, axid, pulmicort, albuterol and anitbiotic injections in her thighs when nothing is working. The ped told us that she needs a fundo and that she has ulcers in her throat as well as her throat is very swollen. Tonsils and Adnoids are gone last year and she ahs had 3 sets of tubes. The GI is not happy becasue she does not appear to be responding well to anything. She ordered a DGE and they called this morning to tell me that she had a 80% residual on the test. We have had 2 DGE done in the last 18 months which were all normal. This is the first one that came back with a delay. I am lost to why this one came back with a delay and nobody really thought she had DGE and was only doing this retest as a "just make sure" before sending her to get a fundo. Do they still do fundo's with you have DGE and is 80% a bad result? I am so lost with all of this and the poor child is crying and in pain and does not eat. If anybody could answer I would appreciate your help.

Hello and (((((hugs)))))

Our son only emptied at 20% after 2 hours. His was corrected with surgery when he had the fundo done. I would make sure that they correct any emptying problems during the fundo surgery or you could have major problems. Should a third test be in order?

They always should check for emptying problems before a fundo so they can correct the empting at the same time. Not doing so will cause serious problems. Our son is much better since his surgery but it took a good year for us to feel we made the right decision. It is a difficult recovery. It does sound like your daughter is having alot of problems though.

Have you exhausted all other options? Tried all meds and combos and dosages? I am sure you have. Just had to ask... Please keep me posted.

You can PM anytime or ask away here or in the fundo section. We have several kids on the boards, and many more with emptying problems as well.

They can still do a fundo when DGE is present--like Erin said, they would need to do a pyloraplasty at the same time. If it wasn't delayed before, I would be hesitant in correcting it right away. Is there any combination she hasn't tried for acid control? Prevacid-zantac, prevacid-pepcid, or prilosec with pepcid or zantac? You mentioned nexium....I would wonder if she could try a motility med first to see if it helps maybe?? It sounds like you have exausted most, if not all, your options---if she truely has DGE, you wouldn't want to do the fundo without also correcting the DGE--this can result in big problems.....Sorry I am not much help!

The moral of this story is DO NOT let them do a fundo if emptying is suspected without correction of it. :smt047

Keep us posted!!!

She has been on prevacid/zantac, prilosec/zantac both on and off over 2 years and now is on nexium/axid. GI told me there is no other combo of drugs to try and now with this failed DGE they added carafate and erythomycin both 4x/day. She is taking on the average about 16-18 does of meds /day and it is a huge battle. GI wants to try this for a couple of days. Her DGE showed she only emptyed 20%. No one can explain why 2 prevous DGE's were normal and this one was not. Can there ever be a side effect of the other drugs that shut the stomach down? Does anyone know at what point do they surgically correct DGE? They said if she does not get medically stable they will admit her. She did eat tonight so I am hopeful she is on the right track. Her throat is so hoarse with the ulcers and now all of this medication which makes her gag and cough uncontrollably. I don't know how long we can stay doing this. On top of that she is up half of the night and will only sleep laying upright on us. ANy thoughts?

Oh, I am sorry. Our son was like this as well, he had tons of meds going in and was just so uncomfortable with gagging, vomiting, choking, coughing and illnesses on illnesses, I nightmare we lived for 2 1/2 years! I hate hearing of other kids suffering like this, Poor baby!

At what point do they surgically correct it? if the emptying is major and its not helped with meds is when they may begin to consider it. I am not sure why it didn't show up before. I am almost inclicned to ask you if you think you should maybe have another to make sure. I wonder if certain meds were helping it and if certain meds did make it empty faster. That is something to think about. Sorry not much help, but I am very sympathetic. Having the fundo and correction of our sons emptying was the best thing we did.
