My son had a fundo done 2 years ago and everything has been great with it.. Dec/05 he had a G tube put in and its been going great except for constant leakage but going great.. Oh he is on continuous feeding at night with a very slow rate @ 150mL/hr. Now for about the last 2 weeks or so he has been waking at night retching and gagging alot, and once he actually vomited alot.. The retching and gagging is getting much worse also. Does this mean the fundo may be giving away? If it is does it have to be redone? Has this happened to anyone?
Please Help!

Our son had fundo/g-tube surgery in August. He retched a little in the beginning and then seemed to get better. He's recently (in the past couple of months) started retching all of the time....so much so that he's on a pump 21 hours a day at 45 ml/hr. No one has been able to figure out why he's retching so much, so we are headed to get a second opinion at the best children's hospital in our state next week.
Our doctors have mentioned using Zofran for the retching if we weren't able to control it with the pump feeds. The surgeon doesn't think that the fundo has slipped or anything since he's not bringing anything up when he retches.
I hope that you guys get relief soon, it's terrible to watch your child retch. :(

Could he have delayed gastric emptying??? Maybe the food is sitting too long in his stomach now making him gag and retch?

((((hugs))) It is so hard watching them gag and retch.
Does he still take his reflux meds? Could something have set it off? Have you talked to your doctor about whats going on? Maybe they need to have a look around?
Eli gets gaggy and retchy when he has anything going on out of the norm. And, when he starts it takes a while to stop because the more you do the more the fundo swells and irritates things.
Have you tried just feeding soups and stuff and giving the wrap a break? I would try that and let the doc know.... Keep me posted, I will be thinking of you guys!

It seems that many of you have similar encounters as I do. My niece is being put on a 20hour drip 35cc over four hours during that time. Did your child ever stop retching? My niece has a problem with gagging and retching with her G tube which is now herniated. The doctors won't fix it because they don't think it will help. She is also failure to thrive. My sister cannot get answers from any of her doctors but a referral in July with a specialist in Chicago. She is only 16pds at 22 months old and our fear is that if something isn't done soon she could die. A GJ tube is being inserted next week. I really don't think her doctors even know what to do at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions or personal expierences with this?

I won't move this since I noticed this is your first post so I wanted to suggest that you post this in the tube section as well, we should have it in both so you get a better response. Our son had the fundo but no tubes placed. Your neice sounds like she is in serious need of help so I hope you can get some answers here. Let me post the link so you can post in the tube section too. I will PM some people who will hopefully be able to help you.

I would start your own thread over there. Let me know if you need help doing that or if I can help you do anything else! I will be thinking of your neice, please keep us updated!

Gosh -- I wish I could offer you some useful advice. My son got a G tube last summer, but our experience has been very positive. He's had no problems with the tube and has grown a lot since then. It sounds like she must surely still have medical issues that aren't being addressed. I hope the GJ helps her gain some weight.
We have the same issue with my daughter, except her fundo came undon within 6 weeks of having the surgery. She retches all the time. It's worse on the continuous feeds at night and when she's hungry. We've found that mixing gas drops in with the feeds helps. She's also on Reglan which helps a LOT. We have to turn her feeds down during the night or she starts retching too. She also retches with any kind of food at all. At 13 mos. she eating nothing.
Jlyons - My daughter almost died last year with FTT issues when she had her fundo. It turned out that she had Celiac disease ( a severe gluten intolerance) that was causing her issues. She didn't gain any weight at all until I went on a gluten free diet and gave her only breast milk. Celiac is one of the most common diseases in the US, yet the most underdiagnosed. The drs. refused to test for it, so I tried the diet and she gained 17 oz. in 2 weeks. It was amazing at the response. Since then my 3 year old was diagnosed after a year of not growing at all and he's grown an inch and a pound a month since diagnosis. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions and I'll help all I can. Celiac.com is also great resource.

It seems that many of the things you've described are similiar to what my niece has gone through.
Have the doctors ever considered inserted a GJ tube for her? My niece had hers put in last week and is doing great. Her doctor also had her on many GERD medications that were tried and failed. Now she is on Prevacid and she also hasn't had any gagging retching.
Any weight issues with your daughter? Because for now her 20 hour formula drip is the last straw before they say they will admit her to the hospital.

She had an NJ before getting the G-tube and the fundo. I tried to talk them into just doing the G-tube, but they refused. She has been on Zantac and Prilosec, but is now on Prevacid, Reglan, and Carafate. The retching is painful for her and hard to deal with, but otherwise she is thriving. It's hard to describe the difference now and before the GF diet. She was born at 7-4 and only gained a couple of oz. in her first 5 mos. Whe I started the GF diet, she gained 17 oz. in 2 weeks. It was AMAZING. Before she had blood backing up into her G-tube, lethargy, severe anemia (needing blood transfusions), projectile vomiting, rashes. All of that is completely gone unless I eat gluten accidentally. She is now 14-8. She's still tiny, but chubby now. She's so much healthier now.
Celiac has many possible symptoms that vary widely. Sometimes it can be just the FTT issues. I know I sound like I think all FTT kids have it, but if you have a child that is that sick, I think it should be investigated. It's very hard to diagnose in kids under 5, but a diet trial gives you clear answers most of the time. Our drs. had refused to test Megan because they said she was a heart baby and heart babies just aren't well. Now they admit they were wrong.
