Do they always put a g tube in when they do a fundo? I have a 2yr old that is getting evaluated and everything I read looks like they do a g tube with a fundo. If they do a g tube how long do they keep it in?

Becky in NM 02-26-2006, 09:22 PM I have no idea what the statistics are (my son has a G tube only) but I'm pretty sure Eli had a fundo only. I'll PM Erin about getting back to you. alitressa 02-27-2006, 08:03 AM G-tubes are often put in with a fundo to allow for venting of the stomach. Without the g-tube, some children get painfully bloated. Jax's Mom 02-27-2006, 09:38 AM Hi My son had a fundo done 2 years ago and he didn't have a G-tube put in.. He just got the G tube this year Dec/05 due to FTF and aspiration... Does your daughter have many feeding issues also?? If she does they may put the G tube in for venting and to eliminate another surgery if eating doesn't improve.. Good Luck melba19 02-27-2006, 09:46 AM They do not always put a gtube in with the fundo surgery. I have three kids that have had the surgery done without having the tubes placed. From experience though I wouldnt have the surger done unless a tube was placed. My two sons both ended up requiring a tube placed several months after the fundo because of complications of the surgery. This did require them to go through another surgery and hospital stay. I think that it is much easier to do the gtube placement at the time of the fundo. My one son required his gtube for three years and my ohter son still has his in place over five years later. My dd didnt have a gtube placed but could of really used one. It would have made things much easier on her. She was unable to burp or pass gas after the surgery. She had alot of pain and discomfort for several months post op. If she had the gtube we would have been able to vent her when needed. Now there are alot of kids that recieve the gtube and have them removed several months post op. If there are problems some kids need them longer. I was wondering if your child has had a delayed gastric emptying study done yet? If not it is important to have done prior to the fundo. I was also wondering what other test have been done. I am sorry dont remember everything. Melanie Carla 02-27-2006, 11:02 AM My daughter had two fundos and has never had a gtube. I think it could have been helpful because she too had a lot of pain for a few months after the first due to gas bloat. When a gtube is placed for recovery it is there to vent air so that gas bloat does not happen. I know my daughter would not be eating anything today had she had one though. But given her current circumstances I don't know if that would be such a bad thing---she rarely eats and barely weighs 29 pounds at 4 years old. Her eating progressively has gotten worse since the fundos and her lowest weights were after, not before. A gtube at the very least would have given her the nourishement that she needs and has not been getting all these years so that maybe she wouldn't be so small now. I don't know for sure....just guessing. ElisMom 02-27-2006, 12:11 PM Our son does not have a G-tube with his and he does fine most of the time, I am glad we didn't need one but some children do need them and they can be helpful if your child has gas. There have been a few times I wish we had one. |
