I am feeling pretty stupid tonight  . I was talking to my SIL and we started talking about diaper rash cream. I said ohh Butt Paste is the best, she said well Jenna has never had a rash so I have never really used it. I said well Jackson just has a red butt a lot. So I started thinking :sign7: .....I always thought it was normal after they pooped to have a red bottom. Now after reading about allergies realize that a red ring around the rectum could be an allergy. It isn't always that he has a red butt almost always I am putting something on it after he poops because it is very red.

When we introduced all the foods and everything I never knew that a red ring around the rectum meant allergy. Now with us thinking he has a dairy allergy I am wondering. Hoping I didn't miss something else he has had since we introduced all the food slow and I didn't know to look for this.

I am cutting basic dairy- milk, cheese, and ice cream. I am seeing a lactation consultant on Monday, I am just so confused and now freaking out since I have no idea what could be causing the red butt all the time. Maybe I will have to reintroduce all the foods?

What do you guys think??

I think that would be a great choice. Atleast if you cut all that out and his red bum goes away then you nailed it on the head!
Good luck Meagan...It is so hard to figure out what causes these reactions when it seems your always trying new foods (not you, I mean in general)

I think that you are right on to reintroduce everything and eleminate what seems to cause his "red ring"
Hope you get some answers.

It is probably worth having a think about it. There are some kids who get it as well. Let us know how it goes.

So do you guys think the red ring indicates an allergy or is it just from pooping?? This is my first baby and have no idea if it is normal to have a red bottom like that after pooping and I change it right away?? :help:

I would lean more towards an allergy, unless Jackson just has extremely sensitive skin, Andrew goes alot throughout the day and his butt isn't red...

Hi,
Well a red ring is commonly associated with allergies. But let me tell you that after being on Neocate for almost a month, my son still has one and it is bright bright red, sometimes bloody if I dont get but paste on everytime! It is not normal, so you are right to want to figure out the cause.

About me and Gavin--I breastfed for 7 months. I had milk and soy out of my diet from my 8th month of pregnancy on because my daughter is allergic. I tested it on him after he was born and he went from silent refluxer to projectile vomiter. I then figured out when he was a couple months old that he did not tolerate peanuts either. So I breastfeed for months and months and introduce the least allergenic pureed foods. The red ring is always there. He startes to not want to nurse, we end up on Carnation, then switch to nutramigen then to neocate. The whole time we are thinking allergy. He had the RAST blood allergy test done and everything came back negatve. That does not mean he tolerates these foods, just that there is not a true allergy yet. You would think that being on Neocate, the red ring would go away because he isn't taking in anything he doesn't tolerate! The doctor now thinks there is too much acid in his poop and the only thing we can do about it is slather on the butt paste!!! Our GI mentioned that many other things can cause it and mentioned yeast, and absorbtion problems. At this point I just put a lot of butt paste on (it is the best!) and keep going.

I hope yours is as simple as removing dairy. But don't get discouraged and frustrated if it doesn't work. Because at least inmy son's case nothing has worked for the darn ring. I suppose that is my point!!!!

Meagan, that's exactly the same thing that Owen had and still sometimes has. I had to reintroduce all the solids again to figure out what was causing it. We were successful and figured out some of the things that he can't have. Maybe you can try and keep a food log to see a connection between the reactions and foods. We did that and figure out that yet again I have to cut out all dairy, since he doesn't do good with it. Carrots in this house are a big "no, no" and so are peas, green beans, blueberries and the list goes on. He basicly lives on pears, apples, bananas, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, breastmilk, Alimentum and oatmeal cereal.
I hope you can figure out what is causing this.

Stacy, to be honest we don't get it very often and when we do I haven't really thought about it much. I have noticed that after a runnier poo it will be red or after 2 poos in a row.
Also when B/F can be from certain things like spicy food- maybe when it is red think back to what you were eating and go from there.

Jackson has only had diaper rash once, no red rings, so I would say it is due to some food he is reacting to.
Hope that you figure out what.

A red ring around the anus can be a sign of allergy, but if its the only sign then i wouldnt be entirely convinced that it is an allergy. If his whole butt is red, and its after a bowel movement, then it sounds like he may just have sensitive skin or something close. Is the ring there all the time or just after a bm?

It isn't always everytime he poops but often. We are thinking he could have an allergy from how much he vomits and is constipated. I just never thought of this being a sign. I am thinking we will just kind of reintroduce all the foods as well as me cutting things out of my diet. I have an appointment in the morning with a lactation consultant, so I am hoping she can help us figure things out.

Thanks guys for your help!
