I'm curious as to whether or not there is a connection between a grandparent (or parent) having bi-polar and the child having GERD. A message board that I used to post on had many refluxers with grandparents who have bi-polar.

No one in our family is bi-polar, yet do you often wonder what on earth could be causing so much GERD? I met a girl on Wed. , her little boy had it, and her sister's little boy has it. WHAT IS CAUSING IT? I guess if we knew that we would have the cure, huh???!!!

Seems more boy's than girls. Is there a reason for that?

Janette, I just thought I would add a funny thought. last night I was discussing Parker and how he is a totally different child on or off his meds and we joked that he had bipolar reflux. Oh and no bi-polar in my family but I think my BIL has it, but won't be diagnosed and their son had reflux.

No psychaitric history in my family at all. On my IL's side, Warren's Grandma suffered from depression. Not sure if that means anything.

No Bi-Polar Disorder in my family... Borderline Personality Disorder, yes, which sometimes acts like Bi-Polar Disorder.

I have one relative (through marriage--dh's side) with Borderline Personality Disorder, too, but no bi-polar. Wonder if it's still somehow related...?

What was the % on the other board Janette? Was it pretty high?

Nothing here as per se although I frequently do think some family members are certifiable. :smt047 All joking aside I am curious if it is a link to GERD. I know of a few people who are bipolar (two are friends) and I will have to ask them if they have anyone with GERD in the family.

I would love to know this, I had problems as a teen and it was brought up. I am fine now :razzing: . But, of course I think my Mom and sister have issues LOL

And, Eli is definitely odd.

Thanks everyone! There was never a poll done on the other reflux board, Leigh, but it certainly would have been interesting. Sara, it's interesting that you mentioned the depression, b/c that's what my mom was diagnosed with for years, and they've only discovered in the past year that it has been bi-polar all this time.

I find all of this very interesting....my dh family is full of mental problems! He also says his mom was "depressed", but the lady heard voices~ definitly not depression! DH had a sister and a brother who committed suicide, the brother was undiagnosed schzophrinic (I'm thinkning his mom was too)...don't know about the sister, she passed years before I met DH. He also had another half brother who suffered mental problems and basically ate/smoked himself to death at an early age (mid 40's I think)

I'm not sure if I will mention this to dh or not....I don't want to seem as if I am blaming him or his family..
