View Full Version : Did starting solids aggravate reflux?

Hi everyone! My baby girl turned 4 mths last Sunday. While at her 4mth immunizations/well check we asked our GP about starting solids. He felt we should wait until she is 5 mths. He made it sound like the new trend is to wait until 6mths to start solids, but he felt 6mths was too late and that maybe 4mths was too early, so he suggested to start at 5mths. Now, my next pediatrician appt. is in 2weeks, she'll be 4.5mths then. I want to ask his opinion as he knows a little bit more about GER. (I guess a GI would be the GER/D expert , right?)

Well, my question is when did you have your baby start solids? When did your GI reccomend starting solids? How was the experience? Gaby seems to salivate while watching us eat and is sort of mimicking our chewing etc. I think she's ready, but I'm afraid her reflux will worsen.

Actually, the reflux seems worse right now regardless. I think she is teething. She may also be a little fussy from her immunizations.

I realize every baby is different, but I just wondered what your experiences were.

I'm also concerned that Gaby bobs her head too much. Of course she seemed fine at the doc apptm and I forgot to ask the doc to check her out. She doesn't bob it all the time, just when i hold her in sitting position on my lap. When she's on her tummy, she has good head control. Maybe she has a big , heavy head? It is on the 100th percentile!

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance.

Hi, my dd is named Gabriela, we call her Gabby!
anyway, I started Jackson at 4 months, he has only been eating them for about 3 weeks now. I started him because he wouldn't take his bottle and he didn't gag when I tried it, so I thought "what the heck!"
Then 2 weeks ago I saw our Ped. and told him about his refusal, he suggested we start solids {I already had, but didn't tell him} and see if he would supplement his calories with the solids.
We have only had one problem, green beans were bad for us. Everything else has been fine. He actually tried peaches today for the first time and ate the whole jar! :blob7: *If you can't tell, I was excited!*
So, I say go for it and try! Give her something bland at first, maybe pears, I think that most people online have had good luck with pears, or bananas. Let us know how it goes!

Hi there! :)

My daughter started solids at 4 months because she was very interested in us eating (usually thats how you know they are ready). I tried her on cereal but she wasn't into texture too much and for the first month or so, she only ate Apples, Pears and Bananas... the Ped and GI both said to do whatever we had to to get her a little practice with the spoon.

I made sure to give her something once a day... then at around 6 1/2 months my daughter wanted table foods so she's been eating them since! :)

As for vacc's - they DEFINITELY kick up the reflux when you get them and so does teething... I have to tell you that once my daughter started on solids she was worse for a bit but eventually got better and the solids were staying down more than the formula - which is still the case most of the time now.

Hope this helps a bit... by the way, I started my daughter on solids before the Dr said anything... I went in for her 4 month visit and told them I had started her and they said GOOD! :)

So you are mom, you know best... try it... if it makes her worse, stop for a week or so and try again... thats all you can do... I dont think a month will make a difference - especially if she is eyeing what you're having! :) I cant eat ANYthing without my daughter flipping out to have some now.. it's actually annoying sometimes!! :) A mom's gotta have some ice cream now and then! Geesh! LoL

Good luck, Hope this helped a bit! :)

Michele~ Jackson did the same thing, watched us eat, like crazy. I thought it was really early for him to do this.
Glad to hear that Kaitlyn did it as well and that we just aren't weird!

LoL I thought the same thing but she seemed intrigued by us eating... and she's a nut now! I seriously cant put anything in my mouth without her coming over and standing in front of me whining for some... she's like a dog!! hahahahaha

Sometimes just to enjoy my lunch or anything, I pour some puffs on my plate to give her so I can eat!! The good thing is... she eats everything I eat... so she's not too picky!!

Both of my kids started at 6 months.

Mag's reflux went nuts when she started solids. She was much better off on just the bottle.

All my boys started around 4 months of age. Within about 2 weeks Walker had cottoned on to it while Curran inhaled food right away with the first feeding. Iain is the one who took until he was 14 months of age to start eating stage one purees due to undiagnosed and non-treated reflux.

Many peds do say wait until closer to 6 months and part of that is to help lessen the likelihood of allergies as well. Whatever works for your kiddo is best.

Zachary I started early, like three months maybe, with Andrew, he started cereal at 4 months and other jar foods in between 5 and 6 months. I did not start him on table food until two weeks before he turned one. His ped said that if you start babies on table food to soon, they are more prone to developing food allergies.

Bethany didn't start until 6 months, mainly because of food allergies that run rampant in my family.

Even though I started trying to feed her, she would literally not eat ANYTHING until we started seeing a feeding specialist when she was about 10 months old--she wasn't diagnosed with GERD until about 9 months, so I had no idea what was wrong with her--I just thought she didn't want to eat baby food. :-(

I do know that solids can kick up symptoms--just introduce them slowly and keep track of any changes in BMs, reflux, etc. and you should be okay.

We started solids at 6 1/2 months. He just didn't show an interest but once eating he was at 3 meals a day- rice cereal and any vegie/fruit dishes I made i loved giving him different varieties. At 10months he stopped eating. I think he ate so well cause he was trying to soothe the reflux and by 10mo he realised it only made it worse. He started eating again at about 14 months and is doing really well now.

My advice is to get the reflux as under control as possible before you start and really note any foods she may be refluxing on- I didn't start doing that until recently.

Sarah seems much worse on solids. I was actually thinking of stopping for awhile. Sarah has delayed emptying as well so maybe the solids make it worse for her
