View Full Version : question for you girls about green beans
Emily M 02-23-2006, 08:23 PM Ok, so after Leigh's thread on the hummus I am confused. Are green beans in the soy family??
Jackson had a horrible screaming reaction to them, I thought it was his reflux, but then when Jennifer told me that it they were a legume and in the soy family I thought that was it. He is MSPI.
I want to clarify so I will know for future reference. And what about the hummus??? Are chick peas in the soy family????
HELP!:favorites60:
As far as I remember from the previous posts, green beans are part of the soy family and chickpeas are legumes.

Emily M 02-23-2006, 08:28 PM So, legumes and soy are not one in the same?
As you can tell, I am not a nutritionist! Nor do I remember anything from Home Ec!
Ummmm...I have no idea. I'm going to have to hunt down that thread.
I thought I remembered someone saying chickpeas were part of the legume/peanut family as far as allergies go and g. beans being part of the soy family. I *assume* these (legumes and soy) are not part of the same family...?
Hang on, let me see if I can find it...
*runs back, panting* Okay, here's the link: http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com/forums/showthread.php?p=106560#post106560
Wade through the first posts, which are related to my initial rant, then you'll get to Leigh's (and my) posts about legumes/soy.
Have fun!
Emily M 02-23-2006, 08:39 PM Mary, thank you, but I don't think it helped me any.
It said that chickpeas are in the legume family along with peanuts, soyabean, are green beans a legume? Are legumes soy? I'm really confusing myself now!!!:19:
Why are you asking me all these hard questions? *LOL* Hang on and let me see if I can get some answers. *runs back to the file cabinet and frantically begins searching through it*
Emily M 02-23-2006, 08:47 PM Green beans are also a legume and in the soy family so many babies w/ soy problems, have problems w/ these too.
Have you got the formula straightened out yet? I would reccomend next time he fails a food, to wait a few days before starting a new one in case he has a delayed reaction as well.
Ok, this came from *peach 80* to me about green beans.
What do you think.
Emily M 02-23-2006, 08:48 PM I I am asking you because you are very knowledgable!!!!!!!:razzing: :razzing: :razzing:
The quote about greenbeans I copied from my thread on solid foods when Jackson had problems with them. **Peach 80** responded.
She's totally right--here's a link that may help clarify things for you:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legumes
green beans and chickpeas are both legumes.
Janette 02-23-2006, 08:54 PM I've always heard that green beans are a legume. Amy posted a great definition earlier saying the same thing and somehow relating them to soy. I've been looking for it, but I can't find it.
Emily M 02-23-2006, 09:05 PM Thank you Mary.
Amy posted differently over on Leigh's thread about Curran's cf update. That is why I got confused!
You are a gem!
Emily M 02-23-2006, 09:06 PM Just wanted to say, green beans are NOT in the soy group(they are a legume) ...the problem is that they may cause an allergic reaction to people allergic to soy because they contain some of the same proteins....but soy has over 15 allergenic proteins in it so it isnt a defintete that if you are allergic to soy you will be allergic to green beans, there is just a greater chance for a cross reaction. I'm not sure about intolerances though, because it is related to the proteins, which is usually more of a problem regarding true allergies.

Found it Janette. I guess I misread it. This is what she posted
Janette 02-23-2006, 09:10 PM Glad you found it. Thanks for posting the info. here, Emily!
thepeach80 02-23-2006, 09:33 PM Yes, green beans are NOT soy, but they are in the same family, as are peanuts. I think the rule of thumb is if your child can't handle 3 or 4 legumes, you should avoid the whole family. AJ can't have soy, but has done fine w/ peas and beans and pb, all in the legume family. Evan can't have soy, but tested + to peas as well and more than likely can't have peanuts either. He's never had green beans since he reacted to peas. It's all very confusing sometimes.

Thanks Jennifer. Yes, it is confusing, I'm thinking that we may need to tread lightly with everything! Peanut butter scares the poop out of me! I probably won't introduce it until he is 5! LOL
Thanks for the clarification, Jennifer. This whole thing IS really confusing (as you might have guessed when you muddled through that whole thread! *lol*)
