Hi all,

HOw many of you mix your kid's formula at a higher concentration? How old are your kids? Does this make reflux worse? Can it be damaging to kidneys? It also seems to be making her constipated.

We are currently mixing Allie at 29 cals per oz and she is 6 months old. The dietician at our hospital said we could go to 30 cals/oz but we can't figure out the calculation to do this.

We use nutramigen and are doing 5.5 oz of water to 4 scoops of formula.

Thanks,
Christyn

If the protein levels get too high, then it could be damaging to the kidneys, but as long as you are working with a dietician you should be fine. As well, the dietician should give you a recipe to mix it to the strength she thinks you need.

Shae never did well on concentrated formula, it always made her worse. The only way to know for sure if they'll tolerate it alright is to try unfortunately.

Isabelle is on 24 cal (I think that's what they called it!) I mix 3 scoops of formula to 5oz of water....She seems to do fine on it. She has always had a problem with constipation so I don't really think that added to her problem. I haven't really noticed a difference in it honestly.

My son was on a higher concentration for awhile when he was still very young (and premature). The NICU nutritionist gave us the "recipe." It was a bit strange, because we were adding formula powder to breastmilk, and even though I tested it a few times (30 cals/oz -- woo hoo!), you never really knew exactly how many cals he was getting.
