Hello everyone, hope you are well and having a good day, i am having another end-of-my-tether-day!. My daughter is six months old and since 5 months has been on solids (fruit & veg) as i never seemed to be able to satisfy her hunger. Finally at the end of Jan i got an appointment to see a paed who prescribed gaviscon, told me to cut down her milk to a total of 26 oz a day and see you in April.

Since then when trying to introduce more solids i.e 3 meals a day or more of her meals, she starts off ok but after half a dozen spoonfuls starts whinging, if she isn't whinging i am having to chase her mouth to try to get her to open it. i know she isn't full because as soon as i give her, her bottle she polishes it off!.

I am getting very frustrated having to go through this whole ordeal 3 times a day, the gaviscon not seeing much of an improvement and constantly washing her bed sheets and clothes, which now she is on solids is making it harder and harder to get the stains out!.

Please please please has anyone had this problem, your advice is much appreciated x xx x

Wow... bless you for doing 3 meals a day with a 6 month old... I'm still trying to work that out in my 8 month old lol

With that said... Maybe after the few spoonfuls she is done with the solids? Perhaps you could try doing half of the solids, then half of her bottle and then go back to the solids and then have the rest of her bottle after?? Maybe it would help to split it up a bit and she wouldnt get so whiney about it?

Have you noticed if she does it more with some foods more than others?? It took me a long time to get anything other than Apples, Pears and Banana's in my daughte because she either gagged or got really refluxy from other stuff.

How about very soft table foods? Over cooked noodles, soft soft veggies, mashed potatos? Does she eat those better than the pureed stuff? My daughter doesnt really eat much pureed anymore and hasnt for about a month or so... she is a nut... she eats whatever we're eating and couldnt be bothered with puree...

Anyway, maybe something I said will help!! Good luck and feel free to vent... it gets tough sometimes, we all know how it goes!! :)

I'd get back in that office and tell them to send you to a Pediatric GI specialist... hopefully that will help...I totally understand, my daughter spits up constantly (food) and also projectile vomits the entire contents of her stomach....yeah, my carpet is pretty much destroyed...
I understand, though....
Hope this helps!

My dd is 15 months old and does this constantly (she also has food aversions, so things might be a bit different.)

However, when we were first giving her purees, our feeding specialist told us that GERDlings often get very uncomfortable when eating. We were told (and still do!) to feed her slowly--that is, wait 10-15 seconds between bites, distract her while eating (let her watch TV or sing songs) and that when she gets really upset, to just end the meal and try again later.

Is Gaviscon the only med your dd is taking?

I would urge you to try to get a referral to a pediatric GI so that s/he can evaluate your daugther's condition/eating and see if she might need some different meds, The GI can also either give suggestions re: eating and possibly hook you in with a feeding specialist who can help as well.

Good luck--these eating issues are NOT easy to deal with.

Hi

I have tried the bottle then food but now she seems to have figured out what happens and closes her mouth straight away as soon as the bottle is out. It can be with any food and i know she likes this food because she was fine on it before, i have been careful to only introduce food one at a time to see how she responds to it.I will try the soft table foods though, maybe she needs something a bit more interesting???!!??

Thank you so much, i didn't realise there was different types of reflux. I will try the waiting game. Unfortunately gaviscon is the only medicine she has been prescribed but i will definately go back to the doctors and see if they can take this further or speed up our next appointment.

I personally don't have any experience giving Gaviscon, so I can't comment too much on that. :-(

I have learned over time that when our little GERDlings are in pain, they won't eat well and will refuse food. I learned from my feeding specialist that even when they eat well for the first several bites, they might taper off/refuse because their tummies get full/uncomfortable or because too much too fast will cause reflux episodes.
I know that at least one other mom on this site has a kiddo who doesn't like to be fed by spoon and prefers soft solids she can pick up with her hands and eat herself. :hairpull: It can be so difficult to figure out exactly what is causing your kiddo to not want to eat!

Perhaps you might try the suggestions Michele gave about soft solids in the meantime (while you're waiting to get in to see the doc) along with a slower pace feeding purees to see if any of these ideas work for you.

It took a combination of medications and lots of time (and patience!) to get my dd on track with eating. However, she wasn't diagnosed with GERD until she was almost 9 months old, so we were behind before we even started!

Another answer might be to not do 3 meals, but 5! :) When I factored in the times that my little ones just had a bottle, really they were eating/drinking some kind of meal about 5-6 times a day. Now that we are phasing out bottles altogether, I find that the days I focus on regular snacks are much better than the days I forget. Granted, my guy is older than yours... but the prinicples are the same. You need to *replace* the milk with something else!!! Eating every 3 hours or so during the day will help to break up the pressure to get a *megameal* into your little one.
