hi,

about a month ago i bought some soy formula for my son, and he had a couple of terrible nights (i am both BF and bottle).

like a lot of reflux moms, my ped had me stop eating dairy and soy to see if that would help him sleep. sha also gave us some alimentium to use when we gave him a bottle. it didn't help, and the GI specialist thought it was fine to eat dairy & soy again.

my husband & i were comvinced that the soy fomula was not agreeing with him, but yesterday we had no more formula in the house and no opportunity to get out, so...we used the soy.

long story short, Sam had his first puking episode last night. there are other reasons why this could have happened (he's getting over a cold and eating more than he was, maybe he ate too much) but i was just curious if anyone has heard of or experienced a baby who is sensitive to soy, but not dairy ?

(he hasn't puked since last night, thank goodness, so fingers are crossed !)

Yes. I believe the Alimentium is a hypoallergenic formula do the proteins are a lot smaller and silmilar to breast milk and easier to digest. The soy is on par with normal formula. We don't have the Alimentium so I am pretty sure I am right. A lot of babies can't actually have soy- mine can't

I would assume that a child could be sensitive to soy and not dairy; however, I don't know enough to say for sure.

Yup. My kids are intolerant/allergic to both, but soy is definitely worse than dairy. Evan actually tested + for soy and AJ can have everything now but cow's milk, but no soy. It's more common though to have problems w/ both though.

I was going to say also that if you are going by the formula that won't say if she is allergic, it's more likely to be an intolerence. My kids could have HA formula and I breastfed and never stopped dairy, but with straight cows milk they get a reaction and I tried soy with Parker and it really constipated him.

So how do you know if they are allergic, or intolerant what are the symptoms? Rash, puking, constipation?

An allergic reaction usually involves the reaction of the immune system and histamines.

Here is a link for telling the difference:

My middle son gets the cramping and colon blows pretty fast after ingesting a problem food. He also has sneezing, the "allergic salute" (rubbing his nose and eyes) and watery eyes. The allergic shiners often arrive in short order as well (big dark circles underneath his eyes).

I have known people who have kiddos that are allergic or intolerant of one or the other. Often they do go hand in hand but it is not a given. Curran is definately not able to handle milk and has an allergy to it and via challenges of the soy he replaced milk with we see he reacts to it as well. Not fun.

Well my kids come out in a full rash of eczema to cows milk. They are fine with cheese, yogurt and goats milk. So they can still have dairy, so i say intolerent. Some kids can't handle the big proteins of cows milk. Cheese, yogurt etc are processed differently and it decreases the size of these proteins and that it why they can have this type of dairy- it took me a long time to fully understand that!

That can definitly be. I'm allergic to soy but have no problems with dairy products.
